It's Friday, right?!? I think I said I'd write this on Friday, but Sunday seems a better day anyway. Yes. That's my excuse or whatever.
Anyway, I've actually got back into Alora Fane: Creation quite seriously, which is nice! I was hoping that I might have some pretty pictures or assets to show off, but my work hasn't really been that kind of thing. Rather, I've been coming up with plot ideas that I could make into quests, refining an existing plot idea for an important quest that'll likely be included with the game when it's released, and fixing a bunch of pesky bugs that are annoying but not really worth talking about.
AFC is largely a tool that you can use to make your own stories into RPGs, and so I want to make a few short ones to include at the release to demonstrate the tool's versatility. I prefer the thought of stories that are based around actual characters rather than a chain of events; character development rather than plot. However, this interest only ever manifested as an airy desire in my mind in the past, rather than something that I knew how to realise. I had a bit of an epiphany regarding this yesterday! I came up with a basic template that I could use for short stories, which describes the protagonist's nature and internal struggles rather than simply the external machinations of nations or power figures. It looks like this:
A [adjective] [sentiment] [race] [gender] [job] is dissatisfied with [aspect]. While she is [positive quality], she struggles with [negative quality]. She yearns for [something]. The most prominent person in her life is [person]. Her life changes when [something].
I came up with that, then tried several times to fill in the blanks, with very promising results! It's very different to something like "you are a knight and have to defeat the evil wizard and save the magic crystals", which would be more of an objective mission, while this leads to the creation of more subjective plots driven by emotion, beliefs and dreams.
I was going to include some story sketches I created using that template, but they'd probably be spoilers, so I won't!
THE POINT IS though that I've become rather more re-energised regarding story creation, which is good for my game development as that was one of the walls that was preventing further progress! The main one, probably. I'll use these story sketches to make short quests to include in the version of AFC that I'll release.
I've also started using my time in a more organised way, and I've been very productive as a result. I'm trying to devote my days to game development, art, and music, and I'd like to think that I'm making progress with all of them.
Hopefully by next week I'll have something more substantial to show off, though I am happy to report that I've got out of my rut this week and made good progress towards my goals!
