Zaffre

Here's another one of these 3D models that I've made!
I explained why I'm making these in
∞ the previous post ∞, so you can look at that if you haven't seen it already.
This one's Zaffre, the male protagonist from Miasmon. Unlike Cerise, who's naively idealistic, he's jadedly pragmatic. As shown in the previous post, here's what he looked like in 2012:
And this is him from 2014:
And here's the 3D model that I've just made:
I'm really pleased with this one too! It turned out a whole lot better than I expected it to. I like the face in particular. It's stylised in a way that I didn't think I'd be able to pull off. A nice blend between real(ish) proportions and a more cartoony, caricatured look.
I like the degree of 'paintedness', too. Some artists spend hours intricately painting their 3D models, for undoubtedly impressive results (
∞ this is a good example ∞), but quite frankly I can't be bothered with that. It'd take far too long! But having
no detail to the texture looks bland too, I think. This look works well for me because the detail is selective rather than excessive, it's not too time-consuming to do, and, well, I like it, anyway!
I've also decided to use an outline shader, as the textures are unlit and I don't want them to look
too flat. I've also been trying to sort of emulate the way my 2D art looks, and I do tend to use outlines. Normally I'd draw thicker outlines than these, but due to the way that 3D outlines are handled, they look a lot uglier if I make them any thicker than this.
Here are some more images (some of them have some minor differences because I took the screenshots before adding some finishing tweaks):
And here's Zaffre and Cerise standing together (which also shows Cerise with the outlines):
Overall, I'm really liking how these turned out, and I've already started work on setting up a simple scene between them. I'm aiming to have that ready to show in a couple of days!
