MARDEK Is Now On Steam!
4 years ago - Edited 4 years ago86 words
MARDEK is now ∞ for sale on Steam ∞!

There's also an "OST & Extras" package, if you want the soundtrack and a document I kept notes for the whole series in (with commentary from me-a-few-week-ago), and I've also added a Bundle which contains both with a discount (20%, I think). The game itself also has a 10% launch discount for the first week.

I haven't encountered any myself, but let me know if you experience any issues!

Just bought it! Thank you for everything! Gonna be playing it all day hehe.

Had some troubles launching the game, but restarting my laptop seems to have solved it. First impressions, straight from the menu screen: wow, the music is *way* better than it is in the Flash version! I'll be sure to review it as soon as I re-acquaint myself with the game. As always, best of luck getting more sales!

valaceya1~4Y
I'm also having the same issue except restarting hasn't solved it. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling a few times too. Any suggestions?
1
Tobias 1104~4Y
If you haven't solved this already, accessing the files in the game's folder directly seems to help. If you click the gear icon in Steam and go to Manage -> Browse Local Files, you'll see something called game.exe. That's what Steam tries to run, and I've no idea why it's not working for some people!
2
Endiverge3~4Y
It looks to me like some of the troubles launching the game might be because the launcher crashes if it's run on a Windows user that has never had any Flash saves, since the folder where Flash Player puts its saves doesn't exist yet.

I first ran into this problem when I was trying to run the game on Linux with the version of Wine that Steam for Linux bundles itself with these days, but I was able to replicate the issue on real Windows with a spare computer.

Directly running MARDEK.exe in the game's folder can fix the problem in this case because it creates Flash Player's save folder if it doesn't exist.
2
Kal9~4Y
Endiverge, did you actually manage to run the game under Linux? I didn't even think to try ... but you're giving me some hope. :)

(If that fails, I'm teaming up with one of my friends who has a gamer's machine. That would be many, many visits to his place. :D )

EDIT: Oh, pisastrish and Sekhmet below actually answered my question. Now I only have to figure out if it will work with my particular flavor of Debian.
2
Endiverge3~4Y
On the Linux version of Steam, if you go to the Steam Play tab of the options, and make sure that both checkboxes there are checked, you can actually download and attempt to run any game that's supposed to be Windows-only. The games run through a version of Wine with modifications from Valve, called Proton.

This doesn't work out-of-the-box with MARDEK because of the launcher issue. If you go inside the game's folder and temporarily move or rename game.exe, and rename MARDEK.exe to game.exe, you can bypass the launcher for one launch, which will create the correct folders so that the launcher doesn't crash if you rename/move everything back to normal.

That way, it's possible to play on Linux without breaking the cloud saving!

(The scaling and fullscreen options don't work this way, though. The game will always start at original size in a window.)

Worgit2~4Y
Glad to see that you finally released it, but I'm not seeing the bundle.
1
Tobias 1104~4Y
That's odd; does this link work for you? [LINK]

It does say that it's live in my developer panel!
2
swatllama15~4Y
That bundle wasn't listed on the steam page for me either, but that link worked. Too bad I already bought it - oh well!

How can I actually access the local files for the DLC? Opening the local files for just Mardek doesn't show the DLC soundtrack, and the DLC doesn't show up separately in my library either although I can still access and play it from the store page, but I can't see the pdf.

EDIT: I figured it out. If you click the dropdown that normally says GAMES and tick sountracks, you can access the MARDEK -OST & Extras item in your library, and navigate to the local files from there.
3
Worgit2~4Y
I'm still not seeing the bundle on the game page, but your link worked. Thanks!

MarninPL33~4Y
Just bought it! Money well spent, time to dive back into childhood. But I suppose I will now be more hyped for Mardek-like-elements in Divine Dreams than before, huh.
3
codyfun12329~4Y
It appears you have no recollection of the Blatantly Evil Chancellor when he's called back to in your notes, but he's present in Chapter 3 already: [LINK]

phsc57~4Y
Going to buy it as soon as the money hits my Steam wallet, thank you for doing this, I imagine the experience of just opening the game and hearing MARDEK's theme in higher quality is going to be amazing, thank you for doing this, I also think that long term the game might sell more, as I think it might get really good reviews and websites like [LINK] might make so new people find out about the game, which is why I think you should really try to fix the problem people are having with lauching the game! because the game itself is pretty much amazing, but technical issues can greatly lower the ratings.
3
pisastrish2~4Y
Just bought it on mac, I'm playing by running the swf file and manually backing up saves, but I can't get the walkthrough to run in wine. Would it be possible to include a walkthrough swf in the game directory?
3
ashipwreckedguy1~4Y
So I just read the Mardek storyline document. I'll admit I started to skim around chapter 5 because oh boy does it get... boring to follow, but I picked up the gist of it. While I've never posted any of my "fan theories" as to how the elusive chapter 4 would play out I've always had some of my own. Now knowing what it was supposed to once be I'm left with a lot of weird emotions. But one thing is sure, I'm actually happy the later chapters were never made! I feel like I really finally fully understand why without serious revisions it was never something you had the energy or desire to work on.

I'm happy that even chapter 3 as it ended up being deviates quite a lot from how it was planned and would change quite a few of the plot points planned for future chapters.

I still think about Mardek as a game sometimes. Probably more then I reasonably should. A lot of it has aged horribly. A lot of it I still love and adore. Now I know how it was all once supposed to go... And Its utterly unsatisfying in a way I can't help but laugh at.

But that's it. Even if it probably wouldn't have ended up as in the document, there's no more mystery as to how was supposed to be and Its honestly one of the strangest feelings I've ever felt.
I want to say thanks for all the good times I had with the game Tobias. Even if Its stupid in a lot of ways it still is impressive and inspiring to me that you made it on your own. I hope the re-release and Divine Dreams do well too. Looking forward to it.

I've already 100% Mardek two times. I'm gonna go make that three.

Violet5~4Y
Oh, heck. I hadn't seen that there was a steam release planned until now, but it's a very welcome sight. With everything going on, some good old nostalgia will be nice.
3
phsc57~4Y
I think you could add Steam achievements, maybe the ones from Kongregate but I think more would be nice, just a nice addition, I think the ones about the secret bosses greatly help those who are newer to the game, because they find out there are secret bosses!
2
Tobias 1104~4Y
I'm unable to add Achievements, unfortunately, as having the game communicate with Steam's API proved too great an obstacle for me to overcome.
4
phsc57~4Y
I had an idea about how you could add achievements, I am unsure about how the Steam API works exactly, but you could read the .sol save files to check for some variables and out of that give the achievements, it would not be real time but as far as I know games such as The Binding of Isaac do that, you could check it every time it loads and/or it saves, if even that is not possible, then every time someone opens the game.
2
Tobias 1104~4Y
I actually thought of this! If the .sol files were in an easily readable format (plaintext or xml), I would have gone in this direction, but they're encoded, which makes the data harder to access. I did find a C# .sol parser, but I couldn't afford the time it would have taken to get it working. Sometimes even if things are technically possible, other constraints such as time get in the way.
2
phsc57~4Y
Let's say someone did the code for all of that, would you add it?
0
Danik9~4Y
For some reason i couldnt run the game from steam and i think i found the reason why, i think that steam tries to run the "game.exe" file instead of "MARDEK.exe" file so for any of those who cant run the game try to access the game folder and try to run the "MARDEK.exe" file. Please Tobias fix it, thanks in advance
p.s i wanted to add that ive noticed that your lvl isnt saved for the next chapter which kills any willing to grind or just level up your characters and i think it would be really cool if the level of your characters would transfer to the next chapter. atleast i noticed it in the adobe flash player version of the steam game cuz as i mentioned above the regular steam version didnt work for me
2
Tobias 1104~4Y
It's supposed to run game.exe, though; this is a wrapper which allows you to select a resolution for fullscreen pixel-perfect modes (it loads in and correctly resizes MARDEK.exe). I've no idea why it's not running for some people but is running for others though! Does game.exe run when you try to open it in the folder?
2
Danik9~4Y
Now for some reason it did open after i tried to open it as administrator but before nothing worked i tried to restart the pc open it in steam open through game folder but nothing worked but now it suddenly opened
2
Tobias 1104~4Y
That's weird; for the people it didn't work for, it seems to suddenly start working eventually. I wonder if it just hasn't finished downloaded, or something? I have absolutely no idea, and can't reproduce it to try to find what's going on! At least it works for you now though, sorry about the fuss!

Are you sure levels don't carry over? They're supposed to, and they did when I tested! There might be a special case from chapter 1 to 2 though? I can't remember!
2
Danik9~4Y
Seems like its just special for chapter 1 to 2 because it did carry on the levels from 2 to 3. thanks for the replies now it seems that the game launches and works fine
4
Ampersand68~4Y
A request- I don't know if it's possible to implement easily- but would it be possible to put in volume options for the game? So we can listen to podcasts or YouTube videos in the background without having to mute the game completely. Not a critical need, but it'd be a much appreciated QoL improvement.
3
Tobias 1104~4Y
Things like that would require diving deeply into the code, which isn't really an option since I barely understand it anymore and there's too much risk of breaking something.
5
Sekhmet10~4Y
Great news!

Is there any hope to see this game working on Linux? I can play the original swf (downloaded from the free flash version) in a browser, but I'd love to have the enhanced version (and contribute to the game).
2
Tobias 1104~4Y
Unfortunately, it's unlikely to happen. Porting would take too long, and too few people would buy it (just porting to Windows took a month and it's likely to see less than 1000 total sales). Sorry! If it were as easy as just pressing a 'port to Linux' button, I happily would!
2
Sekhmet10~4Y
I understand! :)
If there are any users here that can tell if the game works with wine I could live with that... ;)
3
pisastrish2~4Y
You can download it by running steam through wine. I haven't been able to get the exe to run, but it includes the swf of the updated version you can run directly. As far as I know, the features the swf doesn't have compared to the exe are: backup saves (which are unlikely to be deleted in the first place and can be backed up manually), the walkthrough (which afaik is the same as the one on kongregate and can probably be downloaded from there), and I think something to handle screen resizing better? All the balance changes are included in the swf
3
Sekhmet10~4Y
For the record: it works!
I installed it through the windows steam client (works but not optimal), and then simply went intro the folder, and I ran the MARDEK.exe file with wine.
And wohoo! :D
4
Kal9~4Y
Happy to report that with the latest version of wine on Debian, Walkthrough.exe seems to work perfectly (scanned through all the chapters and most of the subsections).

Now checking game.exe ... works too! :) With two caveats (perhaps applying to my machine only):

1. It should be used in Windowed mode (otherwise, the game doesn't actually take over my screen but shows only its upper-left corner in a smallish window that I can't resize no matter what).

2. Even in the smallest Windowed mode, the lowest portion of the game screen "falls below" the actual window, so I can't read the last line. (Which is a big obstacle, given that my greatest pleasure in Mardek derives from the dialog. :) Again, I can't resize the game window manually once it opens.

So I guess I'll be playing directly the SWF file. :)

Now, can anyone point me to Tobias's developer notes, where he talks about what Chapter 4 to 8 would have originally been? I can't find them in the game directory.
0
Tobias 1104~4Y
The notes are included in the OST & Extras package!
2
Kal9~4Y
After Tobias's reply, I bought the OST & Extras too ... and now I'm literally rolling with laughter (albeit on my bed; the floor's too darn hard ;). Those snarky bluish--is that teal?--comments are pure gold ....
1
swatllama15~4Y
At a minimum, you should be able to buy it and play the swf if you still want to support him, and the DLC should also work on linux.
3
Refurin24~4Y
(Oh boy, it actually let me log in for the first time in a long time! There were a number of comments I would have liked to leave on previous posts but unfortunately couldn't... Oh well.)

After reading the notes for chapter 4, I found it pretty funny how much of it lined up with speculation about what chapter 4 might have involved that I'd seen over the years on Fig Hunter and beyond. I guess the hints to future events strewn throughout the game did a pretty good job of foreshadowing it all.

In some ways you could maybe say that it was a bit too obvious, but honestly considering chapter 4 was never made, it probably made the sudden end less painful. Even if it never happened I could still imagine it.

Although a good chunk of the plans for chapter 4 were very ridiculous, I still felt like a pretty good chunk of it sounded interesting and compelling. There was enough there that with tinkering and some omissions it would have been pretty enjoyable and I wish it came to be.

I liked the sound of the intro, playing as the Saviours going through a dungeon only to run into Steele at the end. The way it read to me felt like it would have been a fun and lighthearted trip through a dungeon looking for some generic treasure, only for a sudden tonal shift and the satisfaction being torn away at the last second when you see Steele. I think it would have set him up as feeling a lot more threatening than he did after his appearance in chapter 3 to see him so easily and violently deal with both a guardian and the Saviours. The semi graphic sounding scenes that would have followed were a bit strange, though, and felt a bit unnecessary. Could have been better if the results of tampering with the Ether Crystal were left to the imagination, perhaps.

I could needlessly go on about all the notes for chapter 4 and mention everything I did and didn't like the sound of, but I imagine nobody wants to read it!!! Long story short, it didn't seem that bad!

I would definitely be lying if I said that chapter 5 and onwards sounded appealing, though. It felt to me like chapters 5-7 could have just not existed and had some way of cutting straight to chapter 8 and it would have been much better. Most of the character interactions that were described seemed very awkward, like the Mardek and Emela stuff (especially after the dreamstones from chapter 3!!!). I guess I'm not surprised though, it makes it a lot easier to understand why you looked at Mardek as an uncomfortable relic of your younger years that we never understood to the same degree.

But I did like the sound of the potential conclusion, and it would have been very interesting to see Rohoph take full control over everything at the end and rip a fight with Anu away from you after all this time building up to it. Taking the satisfaction of that final fight with the GdM away from the player would have made me pretty angry at him, even more so if it had coincided with him "killing" Mardek.

I don't think it would have really been much of a twist, it was pretty common to believe that Rohoph would be the real antagonist in the end and would be the final boss, but even with it seeming likely it doesn't make me like it any less because after how unpleasant he was by the end of chapter 3, it would have felt great to show him what for.

I'd also never considered what would actually come of the story after everything's said and done, if I always assumed that Belfan would be destroyed, what did I expect to happen once everything was saved??? I guess the super cliche ending of all the remaining characters going separate ways to find something new to do with their lives in a now much more larger world than they're used to. Maybe not the best ending but I don't think I'd hate it!

I feel like I need to bring this up though, going back through chapters 1-3 after reading about the destruction of Belfan and that the majority of everyone wasn't going to leave does have almost every character interaction feel a lot sadder when you think about how nobody would have seen it coming and how all their hardships and growth were all for nothing.

Not even just the thought of Mardek's mother never actually seeing Enki again after all those years of waiting, but even inconsequential characters like Gope, or the kid from Gonzor who really wanted to become something like Mardek! Pretty impactful for something that never even got to happen. It parallels a lot of the same ideas and resulting feelings I've gotten from other endings I've enjoyed such as Death Note or Hotline Miami 2.

A shame things ended at chapter 3 and not chapter 4, even if I could have done without chapters 5-7, I think I would have loved chapter 4! Oh well!!!

JohnnyBoi45~4Y
So of course the first thing I did when I bought the game was go into the files and read the entire Mardek storyline document. And hoooooo boy, that was a trip. I can see why you got stuck, it seems like every chapter was just getting more bloated and over the top than the last. There are some interesting parts for sure, but reading the whole document definitely changed my perspective a bit on the original series and what it would have been. I suppose sometimes no answer to is ever as satisfying or interesting as the question itself. Some of the plot points weren't at all surprising but to have it laid out as fact is... different, to say the least. I still have one burning question, namely "does Mardek survive the series?" but I'm not sure if I want to know.

Hi, there! ^o^
You may (or may not) remember me from the old social network for introverts days, circa 2014. I haven't spoken to you since the site basically died.

But I've been coming to your blog now and then, reading some of your blog posts here, and following your journey from a distance.
You've had quite a ride so far, and I've both felt terribly sad and excited for you, depending on the news.
I haven't been sharing your journey by interacting with you, rather, I've consummated it like some sort of story you'd read, and for this, I apologize. Sorry about not posting any sooner, sorry for not getting in touch.

Anyway, I bought Memody a couple of weeks back, and I will buy MARDEK as soon as it's not on sales anymore, so you can get more money out of my purchase. ;-)

It's good to see you creating again, finishing projects, and getting them out in the world where they belong. I don't know what helped you get to the point of finishing projects, since I haven't read ALL of your blog posts, but it's a true joy to witness the result. ^o^
Keep on creating, and take good care of yourself, man. I wish you nothing but the very best on your journey.

astralwolf91~4Y
aw damn, interesting read, but I really liked the dim-witted + well meaning protagonist Mardek, the conflict between him and intelligent Rohoph would have been more compelling that way (like a mildly retarded individual trying to stand up against a smart manipulative psychopath). Everyone would be rooting for underdog Mardek.

3
GlassRook18201~4Y
congrats on a 100% approval rating on steam!!
3
Astreon152~4Y
There's actually 1 french speaking person that doesn't recommend it because she didn't and still don't like the "childish" humor, and didn't feel the nostalgia.
She is not agressive, and explains her viewpoint quite reasonably, which is rare.

Still, 1 out of 51 at the time i'm writing, brilliant score !

MaxDes45~4Y
When I went on the steam store page, the bundle worked fine and it showed up for me. The OST and notes all worked fine as well.

The first time I launched it, it crashed but after that it worked.

I did feel some great closure when I read your notes. I noticed that you emphasized how naive and unrefined everything was, but honestly even your naive work is better than most people's best since you've had so much experience with making games. Everything should've gone wrong in chapter 3, but you still managed to make it a good experience! So I feel like your selling your past self way too short.

So is it impossible to start a new file from chapter 2 and 3? Also, I've never used steam cloud saves; how do I use those with MARDEK?

Thanks for all of it. I do hope you are successful with advertising this so divine dreams can get an even better release.

nTabem3~4Y
Hello! It's been a long time, but I found out that MARDEK was out on Steam, and I've already bought it!

Have you considered contacting the sites/sponsors where you originally released MARDEK to try gathering exposure to the release (not talking about having them as sponsor/publishers)? Don't know if this is a good option or not. And yeah, it's easier said than done, due to social anxiety... But maybe it's an idea to consider, if not now, perhaps in the future, for other re-release? Like, those sites have a chance to feature high quality work, driving more site visits (several, because the games are long), and in return raise awareness to the Steam release (with a link in the site, in the game description or by uploading a modified version of the SWF with a banner in the main game menu?).
People playing on those sites probably either a) would not buy the game anyway, so no lost sale for you, or b) can decide to buy it, either to support you, or because of the advantages (higher definition music, cross computer cloud saves, browser independent, extra goodies, etc.)

Leaving this as a suggestion only, because I understand nothing about making, releasing or profiting from games...

Well, I have some familiar faces in Belfan to revisit :) Wishing you great success and congratulations for one more release.
4
Nini4~4Y
I think the price is very appropriate for the base game and extra content. Hopefully it catches wind better than your previous release. Something about replaying Mardek 3 outside of the browser really appeals to me; I bought it up as soon as I saw it.

Best of luck with the community expansion you are considering and your future content releases.

Y_R_U_N_My_Yard1~4Y
Fighunter of times of yore that finally created an Alora Fane account just to say thanks for launching MARDEK on Steam - it remains my favorite game of all time, so when I saw it unexpectedly pop up as the top new release last night, I was overjoyed.

I saw someone mention in another comment that they didn't see/weren't able to purchase the bundle, but I had no such issues; the full bundle has a nice place in my library now. 10 years later, and it still tastes just as sweet!

Best of luck with Divine Dreams as well; despite having only just created an *account*, I have poked my head in here on occasion to see what you're up to, and it looks like so much more than I could have imagined back when you first floated the idea all those years ago - great job!
5
vladandrei199647~4Y
Today I've been reading your notes on what the next chapters could have been. I won't spoil anything, but I must say that while it had some rushed elements and was rough around the edges, it could have been something big.

This gave me better reasons to get hyped for Divine Dreams. Now I see DD as the "MARDEK that could have been" , with the more mature mind you have now and the years of experience.

Thanks for giving us the closure we needed and the hope of a new game that wants to reimagine this story.
5
Sekhmet10~4Y
Where are these notes? The blog is so big it's hard to find something here...
I'd love to know how was "supposed" to end the MARDEK series, even if it is a kind of spoil for DD (I think I've played MARDEK enough to earn that, at least).

Edit : oh maybe you are talking about the DLC? I'm currently trying to download it (just fighting with wine+steamapp with windows)

Alban12320~4Y
Tobias, when will you release other games like Deliverance, Beast Signer or Alora Fane? I'll be glad to buy them all.
2
RandomNom3~4Y
You know, I've kinda had this day dreamed in my head for years now. I'm glad it's coming to fruition. I bought it as soon as I found out. Thank you so much!
3
Jared_F3~4Y
Ah, hearing that music again is so nostalgic. I think that I may actually enjoy the ost more than most of the game itself, it held up much better in my opinion. Oddly enough, I don't think the reasons why the game hasn't necessarily lived up to my memories is less due to nostalgia, and more to the age at which I first played Mardek.

I remember empathizing with Mardek, not because of his character necessarily, but the situations he was placed in during chapter 1. A child who spends his time dreaming about being a great hero, performing small tasks while in his mind seeing them as heroic efforts. The inclusion of "imagination" abilities serving as prototypes of moves he would gain later on really stuck out to me, both now and then. It was such a small element that was only present for a short period of time, but it (along with the music) made me care about this character and his journey. As I've grown older however, I see the flaws of the game that I missed or ignored as a child, but the my appreciation for the music has only grown.
The emotions that the ost makes me feel are just as strong as ever.

Anyhow, I'm glad that Mardek and the associated musical tracks finally have a more permanent home on a platform which will hopefully allow a wider audience to view it.

vancho13~4Y
Reading your notes is very interesting! It's cool to see what could have been, in a way, and imagine how the story would unfold and continue. I think you're a little harsh on yourself though :( . I understand the awful things that depression does to your self-esteem, so I'll point out that it's really amazing what you did! You made a huge game with a nuanced story all on your own, without formal training... It's an impressive achievement, even if in the end you didn't finish all of the chapters. Just some food for thought.

3
CogitoErgoSum2~4Y
Hey; I bought the game instantly as soon as I saw this post, but I'm getting pretty crappy FPS in most fights (15-20). Can you give me any tips for anything to improve the framerate? I'm sorry if this has already been addressed; it's just that I got low FPS in the flash version in the browser and I was super hopeful that it's be an issue that'd be addressed in the steam version. Much love regardless; these games are amazing! Keep yourself safe, Tobias.
2
Tobias 1104~4Y
That sounds annoying! Do you have an old/slow computer? And are you able to run other games and programs without any slowdown? I've no idea why this would be happening, but if it's happening in the browser too it seems then computer speed is the only thing that really seems a likely cause. This port is still running on Flash, underneath everything (that's unavoidable), so while there are some improvements from the lack of surrounding clutter, ultimately the speed is still dependent on Flash's limitations.

Sorry, I wish I had a simple solution for you!
1
CogitoErgoSum2~4Y
you're good; i appreciate the response. i can run most other stuff without significant slowdown but maybe it's just Flash? i had a similar problem with AdventureQuest back in the day and im pretty sure that runs on Flash too.

Kal9~4Y
Well ... here goes my summer. :D

Kidding aside, I spent 100+ hours on Chapter 3 alone back in the day, trying to get that pesky megaboss (sorry, my memory doesn't stretch far enough to retrieve the name)--but more importantly, all the Dreamstones. From then on, Mardek was my go-to example of what Flash RPGs are capable of.

Bought it yesterday. Raved about it to a handful of select friends this morning. Wondering how to present it to my other friends in the most appealing way. (Yeah, the non-gamers too. ;)

Wheeee ... that's _loads_ of adrenaline. Thank you, Tobias! :) :) :)

OMG!! Karnos and Animus, I can't imagine what I did to defeat them as for the former I remember my party barely holding on if not for Solaar and Elwyen.

Is there any way I can play on mac?
0
Dingding32167~4Y
Ive seen people mention wrappers and things like Wine etc but you'll need to manually save the swf file, which isn't a huge deal. Likely someone else knows more about this sort of thing and can give you more detail— I have the same problem but I'm just sitting on it for now. Check out the steam reviews and community tab, I recall seeing something there before!
1
zeddy2~4Y
thank you!

DerpyPoint3~4Y
My dream has finally come true! Thanks man. The day has come where MARDEK won't turn my computer into a steampunk engine and finally I can hear the soundtrack without that trademark Flash distortion/compression. It's funny how the way Flash on browser works with audio files has really shaped my childhood experience.
2
vladandrei199647~4Y
Really glad to re-play it, but I must ask a thing. In the changes notes, you said that the droprate of Monster Fangs from Rexaurus changed from 10% to 50%. Are you sure this change is live? I've beaten like 7 Rexaurus and got only 1 monster fang.

I loved this series! I was kind of upset when it ended so quickly, but now I have playing it all over again on Steam to look forward to! The music is excellent! In fact, I just repaired all the links to the soundtrack on the Tv Tropes page so others could hear it for themselves!

This morning I finished my third playthrough, yay! (First and second times: Flash version, third time: Steam version)

A bit disappointed at the end screen though. Thought there would be a bit more (e.g. "Thanks for buying/playing!"). But oh well, I know it's already a lot of hard work to bring Mardek back to life, and I appreciate that very much. Maybe the ending of Atonal Dreams can offer a bit more as you're still developing it :)

I've also purchased the "OST & Extras" and enjoyed reading your "developer's notes". Interesting to know what the plot would have been.

Btw, I love the re-designed main page of this website. Much cleaner than before.

I have a question (first let me tell.. I'm from germany so my englisch isn't that great) I don't own a computer at the moment and can't afford one, but I just wanted to ask since I have a switch whether there would ever be a chance to buy this game in the e-shop. I hope that doesn't sound cheeky because I have no idea about that, nor do I know the circumstances, I would just really like to play this game again

I'd love to do a Switch port, if it were simple, but I don't think it is simple at all, and unfortunately it might not even be possible to get a game this old working on there! Unfortunately it's not something I'll likely have the time to look into any time soon though...

I wish I could just push a 'publish to Switch' button and then you could play it on there, but sadly it's not that simple.

Then there would be another rather simple question.. how do you spell the name "Deugan"? Is it like "Diugen" or "Doigan"?

It's bothering me ever since so I would love to hear about :D

The intended pronunciation of Deugan was 'DYOO-g'n'!

Hello there Tobias!I bought MARDEK a couple of months ago (without the OST and EXTRAS) and I really enjoyed it,played it and it seemed to be even better that I remembered it when I was young!However...I bought the OST and EXTRAS just today and I just can't find the pdf including the dev notes in the local files!I have tried to install and reinstall the game multiple times but with no success...Do you have any idea on how I could fix this issue? Also,Happy new year!

That's odd! If you open Steam, go to the "MARDEK - OST & Extras" in your library and click Browse Local Files, what's contained in the folder that comes up? I just checked, and I'm seeing folders called OST and Piano Collections Sheet Music, and the "MARDEK STORYLINE" pdf is next to them.

Oh! I have checked the local files for the actual MARDEK,not the "OST and Extras"bit haha!I just finished reading the storyline and GODDAMN the chapter IV was spot on!The other ones felt like they were better off in like chapter VII-VIII,or not quite fitting imo,and for one person to do everything it gets more difficult once life gets in ...but nonetheless,I am going to thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking your time immortalizing MARDEK on Steam!Good luck with your future projects during this year,I will check progress whenever it's there!

Cheers!

Hey there,

First of all: big MARDEK fan, bought the game as soon as it was on steam and played it A LOT, both in the early days and now.

Once upon a time (about a year ago) I found a website where all the maps from the game were available. I was using them as I am running a DnD campaign based on MARDEK which has a lot of potential. It has been on hold for a few months due to conflicting agenda's, but we are going to continue soon. However, the website with the maps seems to be dead. I am hoping that somehow I can gain access to the maps again. Preferably by you directly @Tobias as it also gives me the opportunity to properly pay you for their use.

I remember sending an email to the contact email address listed on alorafane when I was just starting with that DnD campaign, but sadly didn't receive an answer. Absolutely no hard feelings :) but here's hoping this will reach you. I'd also gladly discuss my DnD endeavors with you if you are interested at all.

I guess that's about it. Good luck with all your projects and your health. I might not be into everything you are making nowadays, but you gave us MARDEK already and that's more than I could ask for, really made my childhood. I hope that you are really doing something that gives you the self-actualization you deserve to have.

Sorry for the long post
Dries (pronounced 'dreese', I'm belgian :D )

Thanks for your interest in MARDEK! I've never played real-life D&D (just some PC games based on it), though it's interesting knowing something I made inspired that kind of investment! It's great to know it brought you enjoyment even beyond the game itself.

I never had full versions of the maps myself, but I remember them being on the Fig Hunter wiki (I wondered how whoever made them had done so). I'm not sure if that's the site you remember - in which case it's news to me that it's down - but are you familiar with the internet archive/way back machine? You might be able to find a copy of the old site even if it's not around at the moment. You don't need to give me anything for them, though I appreciate the sentiment!

I'm terrible at replying to messages in general, so sorry for not replying to that email! I don't actually remember it, but my memory's not great either.

The wiki still has the maps, but they have a lot of text on them so it's hard to use them. I think it's possible to edit them but I'm pretty bad at graphics. I currently resort to other maps I can find online, so there isn't a big problem or anything but it gives my game something authentic. I'll look into the internet archive later, thanks for the tip!

As for my D&D campaign itself: we did a session last night where my players finally met the world's saviours in the tainted grotto. I had quite some fun impersonating their characters!

If you have interest in trying out D&D yourself, I could could arrange something (if you want of course). It is completely different than any D&D based PC game in my experience.
Due to covid restrictions we have almost exclusively played online up until now, so distance is not an issue (although timing might be). So just let me know and I'll gladly set it up - again, only if you are up for it.

I would buy it if you added steam achievements so I can get achievements to show I grinded for 100%.
