Memody: Sindrel Song OST
3 years ago392 words
I said I'd put up more music albums, so here's the first of 2022: the soundtrack to Memody: Sindrel Song, my first Steam/3D/Unity game that broke so many records with how well it sold and was received!!

This is the same OST that you can get from Steam, which is why I didn't put it on Bandcamp earlier, though I don't suppose it would have made any difference really.

I have mixed feelings about the game itself - I recently replayed it, and meant to write a blog about those feelings, but... ehh, will I ever get around to that? - but I am quite proud of the music.

It's unusual, though; since the game uses music as its gameplay, the main pieces in this OST take the form of a series of short phrases, played using a limited selection of notes, each of which is mimicked by a 'voice' instrument, as the player would have to in the game.

I think they work okay as standalone pieces you can just listen to in the background, though. I've listened to this quite a lot while working, and it's helped me to focus.

My favourite pieces are Vivace's and Course's songs, though I also like Memody's Sindrel Song a lot too!

I'm also experimenting this time with something I've been wondering about for a while, which is putting an album on YouTube. Here's this one on there:

Being on YouTube means there's at least a very slim chance it'll get noticed - more than it being on Bandcamp, anyway - though with this one, I'm not expecting much. I'll be surprised if it gets more than 100 views! Which is a shame since it took a couple of hours to set everything up - it was way slower than I expected it'd be just to export a video with only a static image for visuals, then I decided to use YouTube's 'chapters' feature to list the tracks in the description, which was tedious - but I'm seeing this as practice, much like the game itself was, I suppose. Just getting used to the process.

I've still got a few more albums I want to upload, so hopefully I'll be able to do one a week! Maybe every Sunday?

I really like this game's OST! I especially like how every character's motto features in both their own song, their area song and then finally in the final Memody song. All pulled together by Memody's own motto, which is both the first and last motto in the game. There's a very satisfying bookends to that, one that I'm sure was satisfying for you to make.

One thing I do wonder is whether you still have the original versions of Dhurge's and Hearth's songs? IIRC, those two did get changed quite a bit during development to better fit the game's difficulty curve, even though that did mean some compromises to how the music itself sounds.

I know Memody Sindrel Song wasn't a big financial success, but I still think it's good art. I'm glad you made it and I'm glad I got to play it. It's a fresh take on the idea of a music game, one that I think is more fitting than the usual rhythm game. I also think it's massively impressive you made this during your recovery from literal brain cancer! That's an achievement in and of itself, especially for it to come out this good!

Honestly I think Memody's Sindrel Song might be your best and most meaningful composition. A track combining all of the game's themes and mottos, about choosing to keep living. I think there's something beautiful to that, especially considering the heavy clouds that often hang over you. I hope you'll keep taking Memody's lessons to heart, that life is worth living.

Yeah, the game was good, the soundtrack was good. Grew on me. Wrote everything in my review for the Underdogs already I guess [LINK]

Don't like listening to OSTs on their own though, felt wrong to me since a while back and too many earworms too.
