Website Revisions Soon
2 weeks ago324 words
It's the time of year for festive cheer, though I always seem to end up wrestling with some frustration or another...
This year, it's an issue with this website again. Long story short, my webhost seems to have updated something on their end, likely including the PHP version, which broke some of the amateurish code I wrote years ago, and now comments aren't displaying at all (or rather, I explicitly replaced them with a 'disabled' message).
Because the shift from one year to the next is a time of change anyway, I thought I might as well use this as an opportunity to revise this site. Maybe I'll modernise my PHP knowledge and recode it from scratch, minimising it in the process.
Rather than retaining some vestiges of community features which were more relevant years ago, I might just strip out all the accounts, comments, etc and have the site just as essentially read-only.
That is, the archive of blog posts would remain, but you wouldn't be able to comment on them, or read old comments. I've been posting on Substack instead for a few months anyway, so maybe any new blog posts here could essentially be just be glorified links to my posts over there, where you still can comment if you're so inclined.
Maintaining an interactive website is a constant source of stress that I could do without, honestly. And it's not like there's a ton of engagement on posts here anyway these days.
I might actually try to instead make it more like an archive of my creative work, kind of like a living portfolio. My old Fig Hunter website used to include a page of my midi music compositions, and I've been wanting to bring back something like that for ages. So maybe I could do something like that. Possibly.
I'll likely start on that NEXT YEAR. By which I mean like next week, since those are the same thing.
