(Note: This is an old trailer, from when the game was called 'MARDEK'. I'll update it soon!)

Taming Dreams is...

A single-player RPG for mobiles

The world, story and characters are deep, original and fleshed-out.

Non-violent

You don't kill monsters; you tame your own inner demons, constructively, to grow as a person.

Episodic

The story will continue in new episodes that will be released every few weeks!

Made by one person

I made everything - story, concept, art, music, programming, writing, etc - and I poured my heart into it!

Get it here!

Mardek's father, Enki, was driven by his dream to discover the gods in the Nexus, who he believed would bring an end to suffering. Perhaps continuing this pursuit is the reason he left his family? Deugan - a worrier by nature - clings to this idealistic dream in the hope that if he can prove himself worthy, then the gods might grant him freedom from his own inner suffering. How lucky Mardek must be, to have no mind at all in that empty head of his! No wonder he's always cheery.

Many say that the gods are gone, though; that they abandoned their world of Alora Fane long ago... Indeed, their apparent absence compels an alien deity to appoint himself as the fading world's saviour. But since deities cannot manifest directly into the world of forms, this god finds himself hitching a ride in Mardek's empty head...

Meet some of the many characters!

Mardek

A Bliss-sentiment young man whose thoughtlessly mellow living-in-the-moment approach to life makes him 'empty-headed' in the eyes of his best friend Deugan.

Everything changes one day in his childhood, when he begins sharing his body with a god named Rohoph...

Deugan

A fearful young man who gets caught up in idealistic fantasies about the future.

Fearing that he's 'not good enough', he tries to wear the mask of his idol, Enki, in order to be a 'warrior, not a worrier' when it comes to facing his inner issues...

Meraeadyth

An inventive young woman with a sharp mind and a stutter.

She resents looking after her maimed and sarcastic father and misses her mother and mentor, but refuses to let her pain show on the surface, believing that a mind made 'metal' via the rigid art of reason is the key to avoiding the danger of emotion.

Emeela

A shy, anxious girl who feels different from others, largely because she is.

"A lone god's tear, I feel I long, for deep blue depths, where I'll belong"... One day, she hopes to feel the embrace of others with deer ears, as often the silent guidance of her beloved gods is just not enough.

Enki

"Dreams drive us to divine discoveries!"

Perhaps Mardek's father will someday find true peace and joy in the Nexus, the seat of the gods. Perhaps then he'll come home to his family, and once more fill their hearts with the awe and wonder he feels for every little thing.

Rohoph

One of the Atonae: six mysteriously worldless gods who watch the story unfold from an outer realm.

While he is not the dreamer of the dying dream of Alora Fane, he hopes to bring salvation to those who are good, though he'll need the world to worship him first.

Features and such!

Made with care

Taming Dreams is a story about dreams, divinity and spiritual salvation told in the form of an episodic single-player retro-style role-playing game.

Dozens of hour-or-so-long episodes are planned, which will be released on mobiles and hopefully Steam as well.

The game and all its assets (art, music, writing, concept, programming, this site, etc) are made by one person, and Taming Dreams is my attempt to give form to my soul, in a sense. Its story resonates deeply with me on a personal level. It's certainly not a Product produced purely for profit.

A non-violent RPG

I wanted to create a 'non-violent' RPG with a strong focus on characters' interpersonal relationships, feelings, and inner struggles; their personal dreams and values rather than simply 'stopping the bad guy'.

Certain characters or themes are inspired by anxiety, depression, and other mental burdens, but the work as a whole doesn't take itself too seriously (though it doesn't descend into 'wacky parody' territory either).

The game isn't all dark and gritty, so its colourful, cartoony visuals might suggest it's for children. It's not!
The dialogue and themes are relatively mature and complex (just not 'Mature' in the shallow swearing-sex-violence-drugs kind of way).

How does Tifa feel about Red XIII?

Each episode will focus on a usually different configuration of up to four characters from the large cast, and no two characters will ever travel together without developing some kind of opinion of one another (unlike in many other RPGs, where the protagonists' followers rarely interact amongst one another).

The game includes a Chat feature that allows you to have any two of your characters interact at any time. What does the aged shaman who just joined have to say to the girl who insists she's unburdened by emotions? With this system, you can see. You can also see a character's private thoughts by having them 'chat' with themselves!

What characters say to one another changes as regularly as the events around them do!

A Forsaken Fantasy

The game is set in a fantastical world called Alora Fane... which is more like a collection of six separate worlds - each home to a separate race - 'orbiting' a central hub. The beings that created the world - the Aolmna - used to walk amongst their Barbari children, but they fell silent when one of the races destroyed themselves and their petal world several centuries ago...

The story begins on the petal known as the Bronze Archipelago: a chain of tropical islands home to the gutsy leonine Bold race.

Mental Monsters Made Manifest

The Aolmna shaped the world with thoughts and feelings, and the fabric of reality is still malleable to some degree. The 'inner demons' of mortal minds are given phantasmal form by the ubiquitous substance known as miasma - a process known as agitation, which replaces the 'battles' common to RPGs - and while these miasmon are no more physically real than the beasts in dreams, they - like like the dark thoughts they are - can cause madness if left to run rampant.

Fortunately, the feelings-to-form nature of the miasma allows people to call upon the strong sentimental value stored in precious mementos in order to conjure up bursts of soothing emotion-energy; a process known as sentimancy.

Miasmon can be tamed using sentimancy that resonates with them. This is a constructive process that involves building rapport with the thoughtform so then you can accept it as part of yourself, rather than trying to defeat or dominate or destroy with violence.

Personality, not brawn

The world of Alora Fane uses an 'elemental' system based on flavours of feelings. These six sentiments - Courage, Fear, Bliss, Destruction, Creation and Sorrow - colour the natures of people, miasmon and sentimancy, and miasmon respond best to sentimancy of their own innate sentiment or the sentiment that best allows it to grow.

How characters fare against certain miasmon isn't based on their physical strength, but their personality, expressed via a set of Myers-Briggs-inspired runes. Characters are not 'stronger' or 'weaker' than others; they are simply different, and each has their place.

Befriending your fragmented self

Characters do not wield weapons. Instead, once understanding is achieved with a thought given form - that is, when you tame a miasmon - that thought can be 'equipped' on a character and summoned at will as a brief, standard action in order to tame other miasmon.

Each miasmon has been carefully designed; there won't be a succession of throwaway 'underground monkeys'.

The story affects gameplay

Since sentimancy is an emotional process, its effectiveness is tied to how excited characters or miasmon are. Characters' excitement levels fluctuate as events effect them, and this carries over into agitation ('battles').

Reboot

Taming Dreams is a complete reboot of a series of free online RPGs called 'MARDEK', which I made and released in 2007 - 2010.

I had many reasons for restarting the story in a new world rather than continuing on with 'MARDEK 4', which you can read about on this page.
