Atonal Dreams

An an immersive indie turn-based RPG that blends surface silliness with a deeper exploration of the nature of reality, the afterlife, and coping with mental trauma, in which an angelic alien-devil knight travels with his spunky dog-girl apprentice/fangirl to a monastery full of monks who ponder what lies beyond life's end.

Set in a world where emotions manifest as monsters and magic, the game explores our conflicted hero's painful guilt and hopeful devotion as the realm of dreams confronts him with the demons of his past.

As it's my current project, a lot is still in flux, so check the blog for details.

4 years ago - Edited 4 years ago795 words
After weeks of wondering and planning, I feel I've got the ball rolling on Atonal Dreams now! I've made an info page and a roadmap to explain what the game is and when it might be finished, as well as some new systems that I just added this week!

Memody: Sindrel Song

Memody: Sindrel Song is a novel take on the music game genre, in which you must accurately mimic musical melodies to build memories that give light to life despite the darkness inside your mind.

It was made shortly after I'd had major surgery and radiotherapy for brain cancer, which presented a risk of losing my own memory. I've also suffered all my life with severe social anxiety/avoidant personality disorder, which is all about being haunted by (often objectively trivial) memories of social embarrassment. It helped me cope with both.

Its mechanics and themes are based on the light and dark sides of memory. Memories can be a source of pain, but they define who we are, and forming memories is what life is all about.

Old Games

These are games that I (Tobias Cornwall) made years ago in (what was then called) Flash. Some were quite popular, some were never released. Most were left unfinished, but they're interesting to look at to see how my earlier ideas took form, where all this began.

2007-2010

MARDEK

This was quite a hit, back in the day! It's an RPG which is both a homage to - and a soft parody of - old-school JRPGs, most notably the early Final Fantasies. The series was naively planned to be eight chapters long, but reality got in the way of that ludicrous goal. Still, there are many dozens of hours of gameplay in the three chapters that do exist.

I've grown a lot as a person and a creator since I made this, but it remains my most influential creation. I'm currently looking into remaking it using my new skills; see the blog for more information.

I've had requests to release the originals though, unchanged, so a Steam re-release should be coming in the near future.

Taming Dreams

A reimagining of the original MARDEK story, set in (an early version of) the Alora Fane world. It has a 'combat' system based around using emotions to calm inner monsters made external, and its setting and story have strong spiritual themes. It's 'better' than MARDEK in a lot of ways, but cerebral and abstract, so not everyone's cup of tea.

Like MARDEK, it was planned as many chapters, but life got in the way so only three were made.

My Old Games I'll Be Re-releasing! (EDIT 2)
5 years ago - Edited 5 years ago2,760 words
It seems I'm able to make executables of my old games! Gasp! This means they'll be more accessible even without Flash. I've made a list of all the old games that I feel might be worth 're-releasing', some more finished than others. I might even 'remaster' them a little bit, fixing some little details and removing no-longer-relevant stuff (eg sponsor branding). This means I might also be able to release the original MARDEK chapters on Steam, unaltered. (EDIT: I've added a poll to gauge which ones have any interest, so then I can know where to focus first.)

Alora Fane: Creation

The first game set in (an early version of) the Alora Fane world. It's mostly a simple map editor, which allows you to make your own adventures in an accessible way. It's also unfinished and lacking many assets (eg battle backgrounds), and it was never released for this reason, but there's a lot there to play with.

Miasmon

A monster-catching game (ie Pokemon clone), in which you capture and train monsters that form from the omnipresent 'miasma', while exploring the ancient ruins of Fracture. It's unfinished and lacking a lot of content, but there's still a lot there.

Clarence's Big Chance

A silly retro-style platformer in which you play as an off-putting 35-year-old man who's preparing for the first date in his life. He must go through his morning routine, travel the streets to get to work, do his job, and make his way to the restaurant, where his success at his date is determined by what he's achieved along the way.

It's very different to the kinds of things I prefer to make these days, and it's strange thinking that I ever made it!
